CHRISTIAN UNITY IS A MARK OF EXCELLENCE
From the very beginning of the Church on the day of Pentecost, one characteristic that stood out more sharply than others was diversity. The Christian Church dismantled the barriers of race, gender, and social class that marked Jewish congregations. Paul, who was a rabbi, had given thanks to God daily that he had not been born a woman, slave, or Gentile. No doubt he marveled at the radical change: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:28). This verse emphasizes the unity and the equality among believers in Christ, regardless of ethnic background or social status.
A friend of mine who is Muslim invited me to their mosque for worship, and I immediately noticed the separation within the congregation—the separation of the men, women, and children from one another. A Hindu person I ministered to says they can duplicate many things in the Christian Church, including miracles. When I was a teenager, I took my younger brother with me, and we visited this Church on the University of Chicago campus. We opened the door to go in, and it seemed everyone in the Church turned around to look at Us. I noticed that everyone I saw in the Church was white; at that moment, a strange feeling came over me for the first time. The usher was nice and invited us in, but I told them I was in the wrong place.
Diversity complicates rather than simplifies life. For this reason, we tend to surround ourselves with people of similar age, economic class, and opinions.
I felt more at home in the churches where we lived because the Congregation was black. The only Church that resembled the Church of Pentecost was the Catholic Church. There was a mix of different races of people. This is the church I attended, and even though I didn’t understand much of what was said in those days because they spoke some English, a great deal of what they said was in Latin. That’s another story.
However, I can see today that God’s Purpose in the church is not static but evolving and becoming increasingly apparent. Today, more churches are more diverse than at any other time in history. When you go to church today, you may be sitting next to a doctor on one side and a woman breastfeeding her baby on the other, a wealthy person sitting next to a homeless person—people of different races all worshipping the same God together. This growth is a testament to the hopeful and optimistic future of the Christian Church.
Colossians 3:11 reiterates this concept by stating, “Here there is not Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian or Scythian, slave or free; but Christ is all and in all.” This verse highlights that in the body of Christ, distinctions based on ethnicity or social status are irrelevant; all believers are united in their identity as children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. This biblical truth underscores the importance of unity and love among believers. They transcend any cultural or societal barriers that may exist.
- MEMBERS OF THE BODY – CHRIST IS THE HEAD
“And He is Head of the Body, the church; He is the beginning the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He may have preeminent.” (Col 1:20). This verse emphasizes the role of Jesus in the church. As Head of the church, Christ has authority over the church. As head of the body, It signifies his leadership supremacy and intimate connection with the church. This reiteration of Jesus as the Head of the church provides a sense of security and guidance to all believers.
Instead, Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, whom the whole body joined together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.(EPH 4:15-16)
We have to speak the truth in love and grow together as the body of Christ. We are called to be united in love and truth, constantly growing and maturing in our faith to become more like Christ, the head of the Church. The metaphor of the Body highlights the interconnectedness of believers, each of us playing a unique role in the functioning and growth of the Church. When each member fulfills their role and works together in unity, the body of Christ is strengthened and built up in Love. As believers, we must prioritize truth, Love, unity, and growth within the Body of Christ, with Christ as the ultimate source.
- BRANCHES IN THE VINE – CHRIST IS THE STEM
I am the Vine; ye are the branches: He that Abide in me, and I in him, the same bring forth fruit: without me, ye can do nothing. John 15:5
A branch in the vine gets nourishment from the vine; if the branch is not connected or is choked off, it cannot receive the nourishment it needs to grow. You must remain rooted in the vine to receive the nourishment you need to grow. You will become sick and dried up. Without being rooted in the vine, there is nothing you can do. If you don’t remain rooted in Jesus, it will be difficult and even impossible for you to do anything; you will be too weak and sick.
- STONES IN A BUILDING – CHRIST THE CORNER
Ye, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5).
You are the Church, not the building that you go to to worship God. You are the Stones in which Christ used to build His Church. Living Stones That is what you are, and Jesus Christ Is the Head cornerstone upon which the whole building rests; he is The Foundational cornerstone.
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone; In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto a holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are built together for a habitation of God through the Spirit(Eph 2:20-23)
SHEEP OF THE FLOCK- CHRIST THE SHEPHERD
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his blood.
( ACTS 20:28).
